BACKGROUND ; KD is well known as an immune disease associated with infectious diseases. COVID-19, which occurred in 2019, brought significant changes to the outbreak of infectious diseases due to social isolation and strengthening of personal hygiene. The author sought to investigate the relationship between changes in the occurrence of respiratory virus before and after the outbreak of COVID-19 and the occurrence of KD.
METHODS ; Data from 13,434 patients hospitalized for KD from 2019 to 2022 were used using the open access big data system of Health Insurance Review and Assessment, and the relationship between the change in the frequency of respiratory viral disease before and after the occurrence of COVID-19 and the occurrence of KD disease was investigated using the monthly incidence of viral disease of Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency.
RESULTS ; The frequency of respiratory viral disease has decreased significantly compared to before the COVID-19 outbreak. Human bocavirus, respiratory syncytial virus, human coronavirus, and enterovirus decreased significantly and returned to the same pattern as in 2019 from the fall of 2021. The relationship between the occurrence of KD and each virus, there was no significant correlation between the occurrence of KD and respiratory virus in 2019. The total number of viral diseases decreased significantly in 2020, but it was found to be proportional to the increase and occurrence of KD in the cases of adenovirus, parainfluenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus, rhinovirus, human metapneumovirus, human coronavirus, and enterovirus.. The number of patients with KD increased in proportion to the occurrence of enterovirus in 2021, respiratory syncytial virus and human metapneumovirus in 2022.
Conclusion: The COVID-19 epidemic has brought about changes in the prevalence pattern of viral diseases. During the COVID-19 period, there was a deep correlation between the increase in specific viruses and the occurrence of KD, but it is believed that the increase in various viral diseases is related to the increase in KD as the spread of suppressed viruses expands.
