RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS OF KAWASAKI DISEASE TREATMENT OUTCOMES IN POLAND'S POMERANIAN REGION (1997-2021)
Introduction:
The first diagnoses of Kawasaki disease in Poland in the Pomeranian Voivodeship were made in 1997. The aim of the conducted study was a retrospective assessment of the treatment outcomes for Kawasaki disease in this region.
Material and Methodology:
The analysis included 102 patients who, between 1997 and 2021, were treated for Kawasaki disease at the Clinic or Department of Paediatric Cardiology and Congenital Heart Diseases at the Gdańsk Medical University. The patients underwent detailed control examinations, including echocardiography of the coronary arteries. Additionally, 37 patients were selected for angiographic examination of the coronary arteries using computer tomography.
Results:
A total of 80 patients participated in the study, including 48 (60%) males and 32 (40%) females. The average age of the patients at the onset of the disease was 2.3±2.2 years, and the average time from the onset of the disease to its diagnosis was 9.9±5 days. In 31 (11.3%) patients, Kawasaki disease was diagnosed after 10 days of fever. 63 (78.8%) patients had the complete form of the disease, and 17 (21.3%) had an incomplete form. CAL were diagnosed in 17 (21.3%) patients during the short-term observation period (average 30 days from onset). The average age of the patients at the time of the control examinations was 10.8±7.1 years. For 46 (57.5%) patients, the observation period was ≥5 years from the onset of the disease. Full normalization of the coronary artery diameters was observed in 12 of 17 patients (70.6%) from this group.
Conclusions:
The high incidence of CAL (21.3%) in the study group underscores the need for further education and dissemination of information about Kawasaki disease in Poland to improve treatment outcomes.
